We invest the funds entrusted to us responsibly and for the long term to pay pension promises. Acting as a leader in ethical and responsible investment, and guided by Church teaching, we work with other pension funds and the companies in which we invest to drive lasting change to the world around us and into which our members will retire.

How contributions are invested

You cannot choose your own investments, we invest your money for you.

We pool all members' accounts together and invest this in our Common Investment Fund. This is a collective fund for all our pension schemes, amounting to over £3bn.

Through this, we invest in a range of asset classes. The breakdown below shows current allocation. This changes over time.

All our investments adhere to our Church of England ethical investment criteria.

Investment portfolio breakdown

This is how we currently collectively invest PB Classic assets. It changes over time.

Global equities

Global equities are stocks of companies that are traded on various stock exchanges around the world. Investing in global equities allows us to diversify our portfolio by gaining exposure to a wide range of markets and economies.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure is the physical structures and facilities all around us. These include transportation systems, communication networks, water and power lines, and public institutions like schools and hospitals.

Private Equity

Private equity is a type of investment where money is put into companies that aren't listed on public stock exchanges.

Real estate

Real estate is property consisting of land and any structures on it, such as buildings, homes, and commercial spaces.

Liability Driven Investment

Liability-Driven Investment (LDI) is an investment strategy designed to ensure that assets generate enough cash flow to meet specific financial obligations.

Other

This includes:

Cash - refers to money held in accessible accounts. Private equity - is investment directly in private companies, rather than through a stock exchange.

Stewardship in action

We believe that stewardship is integral to being a responsible investor, both financially and ethically. It is directly linked to the risk/return profile of our investments and to our responsibilities as part of the Church of England.

We act on behalf of our members and mobilise the power of the assets entrusted to us. When we work through partnerships with other investing institutions, we believe it is possible to drive positive change - not just in individual company behaviour, but on systemically important issues, with the potential to influence behaviours of entire sectors.
